X-Mode

The all-new X-MODE gives you reliable control with a push of a button. The technology of X-MODE takes command of the engine, transmission, Symmetrical AWD, brakes, and other components to safely navigate through bad roads, slippery surfaces and even the steepest hills. When X-MODE is activated, Hill Descent Control automatically helps to maintain a constant speed when the Outback is traveling downhill.

X-Mode assists in those cases where the vehicle starts moving faster as it drives downhill, like when driving down snowy roads or gravel slopes. Hill Descent Control maintains the vehicle’s speed so the driver can focus more on steering.

For instant, seamless response to changing conditions, the redesigned Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission elevates efficiency of the BOXER engine and Symmetrical AWD by keeping the engine in its ideal power range. Featuring a reinforced transmission case and new torque converter, Lineatronic delivers a smoother ride while also reducing mechanical noise during operation. Adaptive control automatically shifts to the most optimal gear to suit any driving style and road condition, while a stepped variable control is in tune with changes in engine speed, maximising drivability and performance.

Lineartronic is designed for linear response, and of course predictable driving means more fun behind the wheel. Yet there is more than simply selecting the most appropriate gear ratio. Another advantage of CVT is that it allows the engine to operate longer at a lower speed than conventional automatic transmission systems. A lower engine speed means better fuel economy. And CVTs also deliver a smoother ride, as it eliminates shocks when changing gears, and allows the engine to run quieter.

6-Speed Manual Transmission + Viscous Centre Differential AWD

For reliable control and sporty satisfaction, a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission is available on the Forester models. It’s paired with an AWD system utilizing a centre differential with viscous LSD (Limited Slip Differential). If wheel speed differs between the front and rear axles, the system helps distribute power to the wheels with the most traction. The 6-speed offers smoother, more precise shifting, along with the compact size and lightweight that add to the Forester’s sporty feel.

Paddle Shifters

Paddle shifters are mounted on the steering wheel for fingertip control, giving you the power to select the gear ratio of the Lineartronic that best suits your driving situation. They also provide Petrol models with a six-step manual mode and Diesel models with a seven-speed manual mode for quick response on demand. The result is a sharper and sportier driving experience.

Cruise Control

Whether manual or automatic transmition – the standard electronic cruise control enables the driver to drive with pre-selected constant speed on open road. The elegant controls are incorporated into the steering wheel.

SI-DRIVE

Subaru’s renowned Symmetrical AWD platform and its core tenets of horizontal symmetry and low centre of gravity are now available in their full potential in a hybrid package. The system features compact, high-performance motors and batteries mated to the Symmetrical AWD. The drive motor has been built into Subaru’s “Lineartronic(*1)” next-generation transmission system positioned low in the car’s body. The Hybrid Lineartronic has been newly developed while retaining the inherent benefits of the Lineartronic system, as well as optimising each and every component and improving fuel economy. A Boxer Engine has also been specially engineered to suit the hybrid platform, featuring the Subaru Boxer Engine with a modified compression ratio and reduced friction levels to deliver better fuel economy and operate with less noise. Fuel efficiency on the road is even better with “SI-DRIVE(*2)” and “ECO Cruise Control(*3)” functions designed for optimum control to suit the driving conditions. The hybrid platform not only delivers outstanding fuel efficiency and impressive performance, but also brings a well-balanced design to all aspects of the car, including the driving power, interior comfort and ease-of-use that Subaru is famous for.

Sport Sharp-Mode

In this mode, the engine responds directly to the accelerator for more powerful driving when accelerating. The paddle shifters in Sport Sharp Mode enable the driver to take more control of engine performance with eight gear ratios—like an 8-speed transmission—for truly spirited driving.
